Migrant boat sinks off the coast of Italy with dozens of people missing

Following two shipwrecks off the Italian island of Lampedusa, at least 30 migrants remain missing.

Following inclement weather on Saturday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated on Sunday that survivors had said that around 28 people were lost at sea on one boat and three were reported missing from a second.

Both frail iron boats are thought to have departed on Thursday from Sfax in Tunisia.

In Sicily’s Agrigento, a probe into the shipwrecks has been launched.

On Sunday, rescue workers were also getting ready to rescue about 20 migrants who had become stuck on a rocky section of Lampedusa’s coastline.

The migrants had been there since late Friday, when severe winds caused their boat to be thrown into the rocks.

A greater number of bodies have been found, particularly on the so-called Tunisian route, which has grown riskier in part because of the kind of boats utilized.

Traffickers are sending migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa out to sea in iron boats because they are less expensive than timber boats but are frequently seen as unreliable and breakable.

In order for traffickers to reuse the engines, migrants frequently have them taken from their boats while they are at sea.

The most dangerous passage in the world is across the Central Mediterranean from North Africa to Europe.

Officials report that over 1,800 people have already passed away trying to do so this year, which is over 900 more than in 2017.
