Trump Insists He’s Serious About a Third Term as U.S. President

Former U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated on Sunday that he is considering a third term in office, despite the constitutional two-term limit, according to an NBC News report.

During a phone interview, Trump was asked to clarify his previous remarks about extending his presidency beyond two terms. He respondedHe replied, “I’m completely serious… There are ways it can be done.”

At 78, Trump has frequently hinted at the possibility of serving more than two terms, but his latest comments provided a more direct acknowledgment of potential strategies to make it happen.

Since beginning his second term, Trump has aggressively exercised executive power, working alongside billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to restructure various government agencies. He claims that many of his supporters want him to continue beyond his current term.

Trump told NBC, “Many people want me to pursue it, but I usually remind them that there’s still a long road ahead. We’re still in the early stages of the administration.”

Constitutional Challenges and Possible Workarounds
The U.S. Constitution requires an amendment to permit a third presidential term, a process that demands approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate—an uphill battle given the current political balance.

When asked how he might work around this restriction, Trump suggested that he had already been presented with potential options. He acknowledged that one possibility would be for his Vice President, JD Vance, to run for president and later step down, allowing Trump to assume the role. “That’s one,” he said, hinting that other methods exist but declining to elaborate further.

If Trump were to bypass Congress, he would need the support of two-thirds of U.S. states to convene a constitutional convention—an unprecedented event in American history. Even then, any proposed amendment would require ratification from three-quarters of the states, making the process highly improbable.

Despite these hurdles, Trump’s allies have already taken steps to explore the possibility. In January, shortly after his inauguration, Republican Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee introduced a resolution in the House seeking to amend the Constitution to allow a president to serve up to three terms.

While the legal and political barriers remain significant, Trump’s latest remarks indicate that the idea of extending his presidency is still very much on his radar.
