Tems, a singer and songwriter, made a statement at the 2023 Oscars by donning a colossal headpiece that prevented spectators seated behind her from seeing the stage.
The Nigerian singer, whose song “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is up for Best Original Song, wore the headpiece with a puffy white gown that wrapped around her back.
Tems’ stunning appearance on the red carpet attracted a lot of attention, but as viewers inside the Dolby Theater struggled to see the stage, her headpiece quickly gained notoriety on social media. On Twitter, images of the “Crazy Tings” hitmaker quickly gained hundreds of thousands of views and still growing.
Despite the controversy, Tems stands out at the celebrity-studded event thanks to her distinctive and daring fashion choice. It remains to be seen whether it will ultimately help or hurt her chances of winning the coveted prize, but there’s no denying that she has generated buzz in the entertainment industry.
I’m sobbing because that woman is fighting for her life.
The critic@mrmedina posted a screenshot of a guest craning his neck around Tems’ puffy garment in order to see the stage along with their snarky tweet.
