North Korea warned on Friday that it would respond with “unprecedentedly constant, strong responses” if South Korea and the US go ahead with their planned military exercises, accusing them of escalating tensions in the region.
The foreign ministry of the North also stated that it would consider taking additional military action if Pyongyang continued to come under pressure from the United Nations Security Council, which is influenced by the United States, in a statement carried by state media KCNA.
The announcement coincided with preparations for annual military drills between South Korea and the US in an effort to better counter North Korea’s evolving nuclear and missile threats.
According to the Seoul Defense Ministry on Friday, the allies will conduct tabletop drills in Washington the following week to enhance the performance of American nuclear assets and regular springtime Freedom Shield drills in South Korea the following month.
