On July 13, Egypt will host a session of Sudan’s neighbours to examine measures to put an end to the destructive conflict and lessen its effects on the neighbouring countries.
According to Ahmed Fahmy, spokesman for Egypt’s presidency, the meeting’s goal is to build “new mechanisms” to help resolve the situation in conjunction with regional and international stakeholders. It was not said if representatives from the opposing parties in Sudan will attend or if more information would be available.
For more than ten weeks, fighting between the military of Sudan and a rival paramilitary group has claimed hundreds of lives. A meaningful agreement has not been reached as a result of Saudi Arabia’s peace efforts, and numerous ceasefires have mainly been disregarded.
The United Nations estimates that the violence has resulted in more than 500,000 people leaving the nation and another two million being internally displaced.
