Bill and Melinda Gates have announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage because they “no longer believe we can grow as a couple in the next phase of our lives.”

In 2000, the couple established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating poverty, disease, and inequity around the world.

Mr Gates, Microsoft’s co-founder who made his fortune developing software for personal computers, stepped down from his day-to-day role as CEO in 2008.

When Melinda joined Microsoft in the 1980s, the couple first met.

According to Forbes, Mr Gates is the fourth wealthiest person in the world, worth $124 billion (£89 billion).
