US First Lady arrives in Kenya

1 min read

In the midst of the worst drought the Horn of Africa has seen in decades, US First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in Kenya.

All five of the recent rainy seasons have been below average, which has caused millions of animals to die and damaged many farmers’ crop harvests.

And now climatologists predict that the upcoming rainy season will also be subpar.

It implies that in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, about 22 million people face the threat of extreme hunger.

Important grain exports to Africa and other regions have been constrained as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

The Democratic Party of President Joe Biden has a personal connection to Kenya because Barack Obama, whose father was from Kenya, visited in 2006 as a senator and in 2015 as president.

However, Jill Biden’s trip is primarily focused on strengthening American relations with Africa, which have evolved into a diplomatic flashpoint as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

She was in Namibia on Thursday when its government, along with 14 other African nations, voted against calling for Russia to leave the conflict immediately at the UN.

Only seven states, including Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali, voted against it.
