UN food agency suspends operations in Sudan following staff death

The UN’s food agency announced on Sunday that it was ceasing operations in Sudan following the deaths of three staff members in the unrest-plagued Darfur region as fighting broke out between the army and paramilitaries.

The World Food Programme’s executive director, Cindy McCain, released a statement saying, “I am appalled and heartbroken by the tragic deaths of three WFP employees on Saturday, April 15, in violence in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, while performing their life-saving duties on the front lines of the global hunger crisis.”

We are required to temporarily halt all operations in Sudan while we assess the changing security situation, she said.

She stated, “WFP is committed to helping the Sudanese people who are experiencing severe food insecurity, but we cannot do our life-saving work if the safety and security of our teams and partners is not guaranteed.

“All parties must reach a consensus that guarantees the security of aid workers on the ground and permits the ongoing provision of life-saving humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people. They continue to be our top priority.

On Sunday, fighting erupted in Sudan for a second day as rival generals who had seized power in a coup engaged in battles.

According to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, there have been “tens of deaths” among security forces and at least 56 civilians, including UN personnel, have died.
