Tunisia protests two years after the presidential power grab

On Tuesday, more than 300 people demonstrated in Tunis to commemorate the two years since President Kais Saied suspended Parliament and enacted broad new powers.

Around 20 party members who had been jailed, together with media and business personalities accused of conspiring against state security, were demanded to be released by members of the opposition coalition, the National Salvation Front, who marched to the streets to make their demands.

“It is the result of a comprehensive failure in every area, whether it be connected to constitutional, legal, institutional, economic, social, or human rights, and everything related to freedoms, control and the use of the judicial power, as well as the administration of the files of political opponents. Due to the disruption of water service in recent months, it (these failures) has had a significant impact on citizens’ life.

Lazhar Akremi, a former minister, and Chaima Issa were both freed earlier this month despite the protests of various human rights organizations and Rached Ghannouchi, the head of the Ennahda party. However, other detainees continue to be held.

“Political prisoners, party leaders, and the speaker of the parliament are all in prison during this political crisis. This is the system’s current state and the situation it has put us in. a return to the building of a climate of fear through political detentions and Circular 54, which stifles free speech and undermines media freedom. This is what the July 25 administration has accomplished during its two years in power, according to Ennahdha member Imed Khemiri.

The balance sheet for the last two years is woefully inadequate.

The economy collapsed, resulting in inflation, slowing growth, a flight of investors, and shortages of necessities while the parliament was occupied with endless jousting.
