Tonight’s Philharmonic Surprise Symphony performance

1 min read

Come hear the works of Haydn, Brahms, and Bartók performed by the Qatar Philharmonic this evening.

The event will open with Haydn’s Surprise Symphony, also known as Symphony No. 94 in G Major, which gets its name from the “surprise”—a startlingly loud chord—that interrupts the second movement’s lyrical flow.

The Saint Anthony Chorale by Haydn, which is based on the subject and variations of Brahms’ piece Variations on a subject of Haydn, will follow.

The evening will come to a close with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a vibrant showcase and maybe his most well-known orchestral composition. Elias Grandy, an enthusiastic German conductor, will lead the Philharmonic. Tonight, June 2, at 7:30 p.m., the concert will be held at Mesaimeer’s Hamilton International School Theatre.

Grandy has served as the music director of Heidelberg’s Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera, greatly raising the level of both while enhancing the city’s rapidly expanding image as an important musical hub through intelligent, inventive programming. His reputation on a global scale is growing quickly as a result of his leadership of elite orchestras, namely in Europe, America, and Asia.

He has received praise for his “passionate, spirited” renditions of operatic and orchestral repertoire, his aptitude for understanding “psychological subtleties” that enhance his musical expression, and his outstanding “precision and musical depth.”

The performances of Werther at the Frankfurt Opera, Un ballo in maschera in Essen, Lohengrin in Chemnitz, and Rusalka at the Portland Opera will all feature Elias Grandy as guest conductor in 22/23.

Elias Grandy will lead the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo in the Brahms Symphony No. 1, the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra in the Mahler Symphony No. 1, and the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra in the La Mer of Debussy. He will lead new productions of The Tales of Hoffmann and Love for Three Oranges during his final season as music director in Heidelberg, as well as a number of orchestral programs featuring music by female composers.
