Niger has been referred to as the “economic engine for the Sahel” by Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union.
Following a meeting with president Mohamed Bazoum and other delegation members of the European Commission at the beginning of a two-day visit to the nation, Borrell made his remarks.
The EU declared at the end of the previous year that it would send a military mission to the area to assist the armed forces of Niger.
Niger is the latest of the three neighbors to have a democratically elected government after military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso.
