The Hamad Port Visitors Center is home to the most poisonous fish in the world

The world’s most venomous fish, Stnanceia verrucosa, or more often known as the stonefish, may be seen at the Hamad Port Visitors Center in Umm Al-Houl.

This fearsome animal has venom that is so deadly that it may kill an adult human within an hour. The Stonefish is a fascinating species to study since it possesses a variety of distinctive qualities that are frequently seen in other reef fish.

The fish’s main distinguishing characteristics are a remarkable camouflage effect that enables it to blend in with its surroundings and a painful venomous defense mechanism that is intended to shield the fish from even the most powerful predators. Tragically, the venom can prove fatal to an adult human within an hour of envenomation if untreated.

Due of the specialized nature of antivenom, treatment options are limited. However, applying heat to the injured area has been found to denature Stonefish venom. Hot water should be between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius.

The Stonefish, which resembles a frogfish in appearance, mixes in with its environment well thanks to its camouflaged surface, frequently making coral reefs its home. Their inactive lifestyle encourages algae growth on their body, which further contributes to their ability to blend in. Stonefish, an ambush predator, have extraordinary patience and can wait for hours before their victim comes within striking distance.

Large mouths and powerful jaws help them deliver swift, forceful blows that generate a vacuum effect that allows them to suck in and consume their victims whole. A unique characteristic that Stonefish have is the capacity to survive for up to 24 hours outside of the water, which adds to their long list of exceptional qualities. The Stonefish is housed in an aquarium exhibit at the Hamad Port Visitors Center, which boasts a noteworthy collection of over 80 fish and aquatic species. The center acts as a specially constructed building created to highlight Qatar’s marine achievements and heritage.

The center offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy, including a maritime museum, a 4D cinema, virtual simulators, theatre performances, a designated play area for kids, and an ocean aquarium. The facility is open to visitors from Saturday through Thursday from 8 am to 7 pm and on Friday from 1 pm to 7 pm.
