Werder Bremen of the Bundesliga has acquired Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita on a free transfer, the German club confirmed on Friday.
Keita’s contract with Liverpool expired in the summer, and it was not anticipated that the international from Guinea would extend it there.
In a statement, Keita said, “I’m really looking forward to my new role at Bremen.”

I’ve been to the Weserstadion before, and Werder is a unique club. It’s the correct decision for me because the club and the concept fit me.
Keita won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup during his five years on Merseyside after joining Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2018.
“He brings a lot of international experience to the team, which we will benefit from as a team,” said Bremen coach Ole Werner. “Last year, he was still on the pitch in the Champions League final.”
I’m incredibly excited to collaborate with him.
In their first season back in the top division after being promoted, Bremen placed 13th in the Bundesliga this year, two spots above the relegation zone.
Keita made an impact during his two years at Leipzig, contributing to 15 goals and 17 goals himself in 71 games. His performance earned him a 65 million euro ($70 million) transfer to Liverpool.
