The African Union may be much closer than before to gaining a seat in the G20 after years of struggle.

The G20 has evolved in recent years into the venue where important global governance concerns are debated.

G20 nations account for nearly two-thirds of the world’s population, over 75% of global trade, and 85% of worldwide GDP.

It has been stated that the G20’s credibility has been damaged by the African Union’s non-membership.

However, there are indications that the 55-nation alliance might become the 21st member as early as September with support from China, the United States, and Europe.
