Although no additional snow was expected for the remainder of the week after certain areas of the country witnessed unexpected flurries, South African weather officials issued a warning on Tuesday about the continuation of severely cold temperatures.
For the first time since 2012, snowfall fell on Monday in Johannesburg.
The South African Weather Services recorded snow starting on Monday morning in the provinces of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and the Free State.
Tuesday saw temperatures in some areas of Johannesburg drop to 1 degree Celsius (34 F).
Forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng stated, “We will continue to experience these extremely cold weather conditions for the remainder of the week.”
For the remainder of the week, he said there would be no further snow.
“Snow is still on the ground in some areas of Mpumalanga, but it will melt over the next few days. This week, there won’t be any more snowfall, he said.
Due to regional variations in snowfall, officials were still calculating the total.
