Somali prisoners are not forgotten during Ramadan celebrations

Prisoners in Somalia will also be able to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan as Muslims around the world do.

The International Committee of the Red Cross provided food for the customary iftar meal to nearly 4,000 detainees in 12 facilities across the nation.

According to Mohamed Liban, an ICRC Protection Officer, “We are distributing the foodstuffs to detainees so they feel part of the joy of Ramadan like people outside do during the fast.”

Goats, dates, lentils, milk, sugar, a variety of spices, cooking oil, tomato paste, and tea leaves were some of the supplies distributed.

The holy month of Ramadan falls during one of Somalia’s worst droughts this year, which coincides with the holy month.

Sixth consecutive failed rainy seasons are approaching, and with rising food and fuel costs, millions of Somalis will no longer be able to afford the luxury of three meals per day.
