After searching a rumored “baby factory” in Rivers state, the Nigerian police were able to successfully free six pregnant women, local media said.
A lady, 39, who is thought to be the proprietor of the alleged child trafficking center was taken into custody by the authorities.
The suspect revealed her long-standing involvement in the trafficking industry after being arrested and acknowledged her involvement in the horrible crime.
The principal suspect and her accomplice are currently in arrest, according to state commissioner of police Polycarp Emeka, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
Additionally, a thorough investigation is being conducted to locate and detain any additional people linked to the criminal network.
In Nigeria, where women are kidnapped with the goal of impregnating them and selling the offspring, “baby factories” are a tragic reality.
Similar examples have come to light in the past, and this upsetting practice has long plagued the nation.
In 2019, the Nigerian police made headlines when they freed 19 pregnant women from homes in Lagos that were referred to as “baby factories.”
Additionally, over 160 kids were saved from two unlicensed orphanages in the city the year before, demonstrating the scale of this illegal trade.
