Sidra enhances the lives of numerous kids with complicated kidney illnesses

Numerous kids and teenagers in Qatar who have a range of complex kidney illnesses have benefited from the pediatric nephrology and hypertension services at Sidra Medicine.

Kidney transplants are one of the vital services the division offers to kids with end-stage kidney disease. Since the beginning of the transplant services in April 2019, the department has performed 12 kidney transplants.

Pediatric nephrologist at Sidra Medicine Dr. Ahmad Kaddourah told The Peninsula that kidney transplants can alter a patient’s life expectancy and quality of life. Many patients can go on to live nearly normal lives without needing dialysis.

A multidisciplinary pre-transplant evaluation procedure and post-transplant care, including inpatient and outpatient care, are the foundation of Sidra Medicine’s kidney transplantation program. Aside from appropriate medical, surgical, and critical care management, the service is supplemented by allied health services that address social, psychological, and nutritional requirements. Both living and deceased donors can be used for transplants as part of the service, he continued.

The Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (Hiba), which oversees and controls the nation’s organ donation program, collaborates closely with Sidra Medicine. The foundation of the organ donation program is the widely held belief that organ and tissue donation benefits others by giving them the opportunity to live longer without a failing organ.

Additionally, Dr. Kaddourah urged people to sign up with Qatar’s Organ Donor Registry, which has about 25% of the country’s population listed as potential donors. Children under the age of 18 who have been diagnosed with kidney problems can receive comprehensive, multidisciplinary, tertiary, and quaternary care at Sidra Medicine, a member of the Qatar Foundation and the only nephrology service in Qatar. In addition to the usual out-patient and in-patient care clinics and units, the services include nephrology, hypertension, dialysis, and transplant.

“Our nephrologists diagnose and treat children with kidney conditions at every stage, and we consistently offer the standard top-notch management and care,” he claimed. “We collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to make sure we offer the most cutting-edge alternatives for treating a wide variety of juvenile renal problems. Our multidisciplinary team provides individualized care and supports patients at every stage of treatment, and we are sincerely committed to providing the sophisticated care needed to treat children in Qatar who have renal problems, the doctor continued.

renal failure or acute or chronic renal disease, both of which are potentially fatal illnesses, can arise from significant kidney injury in children. Children’s kidney disease is a serious ailment that needs ongoing medical attention. In addition to being linked to renal disease and obesity, high blood pressure is a significant healthcare burden. When the kidneys are unable to accomplish this anymore, dialysis is the only treatment that can clean the blood and remove extra fluid.

According to him, Sidra Medicine’s multidisciplinary team provides intensive care unit (ICU) care for critically ill patients, and the division of nephrology works in conjunction with the ICU teams to support these kids by providing them with a variety of therapeutic approaches to help these sick infants and kids clear their blood and improve their prognosis.

“We offer all forms of dialysis using cutting-edge technology. In order to keep the quality of life and everyday activities as close to normal as possible, our team will work with the parents to choose the most suitable treatment option that addresses the medical issue.
