Inspector Mohammed Aminu, who was attacked by Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos in May, has been promoted by the Police Service Commission.
Aminu was elevated to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, the PSC’s spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani revealed in a statement on Thursday.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, was also elevated to the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Ani said that the advancements were agreed during a farewell meeting for some PSC executive personnel.
The PSC stated that the assaulted policeman “exhibited a high level of professionalism and restraint and chose to follow the due process of law to seek redress” in promoting him despite the unjustified provocation, intimidation, and serious assault meted out on him.
“Prior to the closing remarks, the commission continued its 21st plenary and approved the appointment of two Deputy Inspectors General of Police, the promotion of CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, to the next rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, and the confirmation of 9,016 Assistant Superintendents of Police who had not yet received confirmation.
The promotion of 14,052 Inspectors to ASPs (unconfirmed) was also accepted by the plenary, and one Inspector, Habila Bulus, was elevated to ASP II in recognition of his valor and devotion to his job.
Additionally, Inspector Mohammed Aminu was upgraded to the rank of an ASP after his image of being attacked while wearing official uniform became viral on social media.
“CP Olalaye Falaye, the former Commissioner of Police for the Ebonyi State Command, was earlier promoted to the next rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police after the commission had approved the adjustment of his position in the seniority list,” Ani stated.
The PSC also approved the appointment of AIG Matthew Akinyosola, who oversees the Special Protection Unit, to the position of Deputy Inspector General of Police to fill that left vacant by Olukayode Egbetokun, the acting Inspector-General of Police and member of the police management team who represented the South-West zone.
