After both of his parents were discovered unconscious at his house last month, one of the most well-known kabuki players in Japan was detained on suspicion of aiding his mother’s suicide on Tuesday, according to the police.

According to Tokyo police, Ennosuke Ichikawa “allegedly made a 75-year-old woman take sleep-inducing pills at his home and die of psychoactive drug addiction, thereby assisting in her suicide,” according to AFP.

The 47-year-old is a well-known performer in the classical style of theatre and has given performances in Paris, London, and Amsterdam.

Rescue personnel discovered Ichikawa’s mother, 75, and his 76-year-old father, a kabuki performer, both unconscious at his home in the capital in May.

Both were eventually determined to be dead, and according to claims in the media, authorities are also looking into the death of his father.

According to Jiji Press, Ichikawa admitted the allegations and told investigators that he planned to “follow my parents and kill myself” on Tuesday.

On that day, he was found unconscious at his house and taken there for questioning before being taken to the hospital.

According to NHK, the suspect admitted to police that his parents had taken sleeping drugs and that the family had “discussed dying and being reborn”.

Additionally, it was claimed that Ichikawa’s home had a note that appeared to be a suicide note.

Ichikawa, whose real name is Takahiko Kinoshi, first appeared in kabuki in 1980 and has since grown to be one of the nation’s most well-known actors.

According to his website, he has previously been nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for dancing performance.
