Philipsen wins the second straight stage of the Tour de France

In a sprint at the Nogaro racetrack on Tuesday that was disrupted by three high-speed falls, Jasper Philipsen won the stage of the Tour de France for the second time in a row.

After beating Phil Bauhaus and Caleb Ewan to the line, Alpecin rider Philipsen finished at a speed of over 67kph and assumed overall leadership in the sprint points race.

In his ongoing struggle to break the record he shares with Eddy Merckx for most Tour de France victories, British veteran Mark Cavendish finished sixth.

The 38-year-old claimed he chose the incorrect wheel to follow after finishing sixth in the sprint on Monday.

The peloton raced around a motorcycle racetrack where there were numerous collisions on the circular chicanes in the startlingly accident-filled finish.

Two riders broke collarbones, according to the tour’s medical staff.

Six seconds ahead of teammate Tadej Pogacar and seven seconds ahead of his brother Simon Yates, Adam Yates kept the yellow overall leader’s jersey.

The peloton will face the first significant mountain stage of the Tour on Wednesday, with about 30 kilometers of climbing at an average gradient of more than 7%.
