Opposition holds a protest in Gambia against corruption

1 min read

Following a call for a protest from a youth group associated with the main opposition party, Gambian protesters are assembling to march through the nation’s capital, Banjul, against corruption.

The United Democratic Party’s (UDP) leader, attorney Ousainu Darboe, had earlier urged supporters to exercise restraint ahead of a demonstration against corruption scheduled for Friday in a WhatsApp audio.

Recently, the UDP Youth Wing requested a police permit for a nonviolent protest against corruption. Following several corruption allegations against government agencies and other local government councils, this occurred.

Attorney Darboe urged Gambians to participate in the nonviolent protest that would go from Jah Oil in Banjul to the National Assembly in Banjul.

He emphasized that when this sort of activity takes place, some criminals always want to take advantage of the opportunity to join the crowd, act illegally, and cause damage. However, the UDP leader vowed to be extremely watchful of those individuals and urged the police to assist in identifying such criminals.

The leader of the largest opposition party in the nation emphasized that the UDP is a party that upholds the law, urging party members to uphold the law and shun insults and other conflicts.

In particular, he urged UDP supporters to join them. “I call on Gambians who are concerned about corruption to join us,” he continued. “The demonstration will begin at 11 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. Everyone ought to show up to voice their opposition to corruption.”
