All of Nigeria’s land borders will be closed on Saturday during the hotly contested elections.
The Nigeria Immigration Service says that the goal of the directive is to make sure that the elections are “free, fair, and free of irregularities.”
Border officials have been instructed to ensure that the directive is strictly followed.
According to reports, the presidential and parliamentary elections will feature the fiercest competition since the end of military rule in 1999.
In the lead-up to the elections, the immigration service reported seizing 6,000 voters cards and other Nigerian identification documents from unauthorized immigrants.
President Muhammadu Buhari had told security forces earlier on Thursday to be “firm and courageous” during the election period and warned that there could be riots after the election results were announced.
