Nigeria swears in Bola Tinubu as new president

The 16th president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has taken the oath of office. On Monday, May 29, 2023, Tinubu and his running mate Kashim Shettima took the oath of office administered by Kayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria announced that the former governor of Lagos State has won the February 2023 presidential election.

With a total of 8,794,726 votes, Tinubu defeated Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, who received 6,984,520 votes overall. Peter Obi of the Labour Party finished third with a total of 6,101,533 votes.

On a platform of reviving hope, Bola Tinubu, 71, won the election in February; but, he now faces enormous economic and security challenges. He succeeds two-term President Muhammadu Buhari amid extreme inflation and record debt levels.

According to the country’s present economic profile, one in three people are unemployed, inflation is at its highest level since 2005, and the output of the crucial oil industry is declining.

The circumstances surrounding the current president’s election are also a very contentious issue in Nigeria. While some people are wholly in favor of the president’s victory, others believe that the election was a fraud and a betrayal of Nigeria’s democracy.

As a result, his rival, Mr. Peter Obi of the Nigerian Labor Party, is still contesting the outcome of the election in court.

Although he noted that he doesn’t require anyone’s sympathy to perform his duties, the president pledged to strive for the good of the country during his inaugural address.

“We face a number of issues, including corruption and insecurity… But don’t feel sorry for me. I requested the job. I ran for office on it. No justifications. I’ll do my best to live up to your expectations, he vowed.
