NFL Apologizes to Lil Wayne After Super Bowl Halftime Show Controversy

1 min read

Kendrick Lamar delivered a high-energy performance during Sunday night’s Super Bowl halftime show, earning widespread praise. However, one person who deliberately skipped the show was sports analyst Skip Bayless, who made it clear that he was boycotting the performance in solidarity with his friend, rapper Lil Wayne.

Bayless took to his platform, The Skip Bayless Show, to express his disappointment over the NFL’s choice of performer. He referenced the ongoing debate about the league’s decision to have Lamar headline the event instead of Lil Wayne, who had expressed his own frustration about not being invited to perform in his hometown of New Orleans.

The veteran broadcaster even speculated that Jay-Z, who oversees entertainment for the NFL, might have played a role in the decision. Bayless suggested that Lil Wayne’s association with Drake—who has been on the receiving end of Lamar’s diss tracks—could have influenced the league’s final choice.

During the episode, Bayless made a surprising claim that the NFL had reached out to Lil Wayne with an apology. According to him, the league sent the rapper a formal letter acknowledging his contributions to football culture and his long-standing support for the sport.

“The NFL immediately sent Wayne a letter of apology,” Bayless said. “It wasn’t signed by any particular person, just from the league, printed on official NFL letterhead. The letter thanked him for his years of support—not just for his favorite team, the Packers, but for promoting the NFL as a whole.”

Bayless emphasized that while Lil Wayne remained a dedicated football fan and planned to watch the game, he had no intention of tuning in for the halftime performance.

Despite the controversy, Lamar took the stage and delivered a show-stopping performance that was met with widespread acclaim from fans and viewers alike.
