A 70-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the death of Nicki Minaj’s father.
Robert Maraj, 64, died in hospital the day after the hit-and-run incident in New York on Friday.
Nassau County Police said in a news conference they had tracked Charles Polevich’s car, and he turned himself into police.
Polevich has been charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence.
Police say he was “absolutely aware” of what had happened.
“He got out of the car and he looked at the deceased, got into his car, and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialling 911, instead of calling an ambulance for the man.
“He went home and secluded the vehicle. He’s well aware of what he did,” Detective Fitzpatrick said.
Police say “the investigation is ongoing”, and the rapper hasn’t said anything publicly yet.
Nicki Minaj – whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty – was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in the Queens borough of New York City.
She’s been nominated for 10 Grammys, won five MTV Video Music Awards and broken the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 entries by a solo female artist.
She announced she was ‘retiring’ in 2019 but has released new music since then.
The 38-year-old recently paid $450,000 to the singer Tracy Chapman to settle a copyright dispute after sampling one of her songs.
