The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reports that its agents have seized N32.4 million believed to be intended for the purchase of votes in Lagos state.

The organization said in a statement on Friday that a suspect had been detained for questioning regarding the development.

N1,000 notes were shown in bundles in a photo that was included with the EFCC statement.

The sum of N32,400,000 (Thirty-two Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira), which was allegedly suspected of being used for vote buying in Lagos, was intercepted in Lagos, according to a statement from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “The massive operation by the EFCC to deter vote trading and other financial malfeasance ahead of tomorrow’s presidential and national assembly elections may have begun paying dividends,” the statement reads.

“Agents from the Commission’s Lagos Zonal Command made the recovery.

“The involved suspect has been detained for further questioning.”

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the head of the EFCC, advised election observers to “show courage and not give room for unscrupulous persons to undermine the integrity of the elections through financial inducement” in his speech on measures to combat vote-buying nationwide.

Following the Rivers state police command’s announcement that it had detained Chinyere Igwe, a member of the house of representatives, with $498,100 cash during a stop-and-search, the EFCC made its discovery in Lagos.

Igwe is a federal representative for Port Harcourt II for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Additionally, he backs PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

According to Rivers police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, the lawmaker was taken into custody with a list for distributing the funds.
