After taking office, President Bola Tinubu campaigned for lower fuel prices, and a video of this appeared online.

On January 25, 2023, Tinubu addressed a gathering at a campaign event in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, and promised them an easier life under his rule. The President used Yoruba as his language of speech.

Two months after the President removed the fuel subsidy upon taking office on May 29, 2023, The PUNCH reported another increase in fuel price on Tuesday, to N617 from N197.

In his inaugural speech, Tinubu proclaimed the end of fuel subsidies. Less than two days later, gasoline was being sold for N537 per litre.

At the event in Abeokuta, Tinubu could be heard reassuring the crowd in Yoruba that, despite the public’s belief that the price of gasoline will reach N200, as the country’s leader, the price would be reviewed and reduced.

“The outstanding Nigerian youngsters, outstanding Nigerian students, and the self-assured Nigerian youths. There has been a revolution. This vote represents a revolution. Despite their schemes, they will fall short. They predicted that petrol costs will rise and hit N200 or N500 per litre. Go ahead and unwind; we’ll collapse the prices.

“They oppose holding this election. They intend to rig the elections. Tinubu posed the question to his supporters, who resoundingly replied “No.”

“We will trek to vote even if they say there is no fuel. They could claim there is no fuel because they are full of mischief. They have been planning to start a fuel shortage, but they have forgotten about it.

“Calm down. I, Asiwaju, have assured you that the gasoline supply issue would be permanently resolved. The axe won’t bother anyone who wants to eat the honey that is entrenched in a mountain. Is that accurate? Additionally, you would bring a stone and use it to shatter the palm frond in order to release the kernel before eating it. It’s difficult to…

“Let them raise the price of fuel; only they know where they have stored fuel, money, and naira; we will pay the increased price, vote, and we shall prevail. even if they altered the naira notes’ ink. Whatever their plans may be, they will fail. We’re going to succeed. (Won ma lule) Those who are in the PDP will lose.

We will take over the government from them, the traitors who wanted to compete with us, because I’m a homeboy and I came here, and you won’t be made to seem bad. They lacked background.
