insiderblmHillary Clinton ushered in a socially-distanced Thanksgiving with a throwback photo of she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea.
In the photo, taken in 1994, the then-president can be seen carving a turkey as Hillary and Chelsea — dressed in very ’90s turtlenecks — await their serving. Bill, who is now 74, shared the same photo on Twitter back in 2014.
Noting that the novel coronavirus pandemic has made Thanksgiving different for everyone, the former secretary of state, 73, wrote that keeping holiday gatherings in accordance with safety precautions was “an act of love and solidarity” — one that would likely make next year’s gatherings even more special.
“Every Thanksgiving that looks different this year is an act of love and solidarity. Thank you for keeping your gatherings small, safe, or over Zoom,” she wrote. “You’re helping to make sure more Americans will be around to celebrate next year — with, I hope, double the hugs for grandma.”
It’s unclear if Hillary and her husband spent the holiday with their daughter and her family, though they’ve already spent much of the year in each other’s company.
Chelsea, the former first daughter, told PEOPLE earlier this year that she and her husband of 10 years Marc Mezvinsky “spent all summer with [her] parents,” along with their three kids — Aidan plus his siblings Jasper, 15 months, and Charlotte, 6.
“It was really wonderful for our kids to have that time with their grandparents — especially for Charlotte and Aidan to be with my parents in the season from late spring really through the whole summer, where they were able to plant a garden together and tend a garden together and pick and harvest the food together and eat the food together and play so many games,” Chelsea, 40, said. “I was really grateful for that time.”
The Clintons have much to be grateful for in 2020.
For Chelsea, she released the latest in her She Persisted children’s book series, which focuses on women breaking barriers in different sects of culture.
Her most recent addition, She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changed the Game, was published in late September.
“I think it’s really important that girls and boys alike grow up knowing and hopefully looking up to and being inspired by strong and persistent women,” she told PEOPLE then.
As for her mother, Hillary, the former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee has kept involved with U.S. politics, her career, and family.
The former first lady celebrated her 45th wedding anniversary with husband Bill and launched new career endeavors, including a new podcast: a 24-episode iHeartRadio program titled, You and Me Both with Hillary Clinton.
Hillary also campaigned on behalf of president-elect Joe Biden. Hillary spoke at the Democratic National Convention — and took a few jabs at Donald Trump in the process, noting how she won the popular vote in 2016 by roughly three million votes.
But amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and another contentious presidential contest‚ the popular choice for president in 2016 instead landed on a message of hope: “To all the young people: Don’t give up on America,” Hillary said. “Despite our flaws and problems, we have come so far.”
“There’s a lot of heartbreak in America right now—and the truth is, many things were broken before the pandemic,” she added. “But, as the saying goes, the world breaks everyone at one point or another, and afterward, many are stronger in the broken places.”
