As he got ready for his team’s Community Shield match against Arsenal, Pep Guardiola revealed that defender Josko Gvardiol was having a medical at Manchester City on Friday in preparation for a possible transfer from RB Leipzig.
The treble winners are reportedly close to agreeing on a cost of 90 million euros ($99 million) for the Croatian international.
Before Sunday’s season-opening match at Wembley against Arsenal, Guardiola told reporters: “Regarding Gvardiol — what a wonderful surname he has — he’s doing a medical exam.
“Everyone is aware that he is here, and hopefully, we can close the deal in the coming hours or days.”
In response to questions about Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva’s futures, Guardiola, 52, made it clear that he wants both players to stay, particularly in light of the losses of captain Ilkay Gundogan and winger Riyad Mahrez.
What else can I say to Kyle and Bernardo? They are crucial to our success, and replacing them would be quite challenging, according to Guardiola.
“We lost two wonderful players; Gundogan and Riyad were vital to our team the past two seasons in terms of goals, assists, and personality in crucial situations.
It would be very challenging to lose Kyle and Bernardo. They want to stay here, so we will do everything in our power to keep them.
