Terna Amos, a victim of an armed robbery, described how he and other occupants of a car traveling from Otukpo to Makurdi, both in Benue State, were ambushed by suspected armed robbers on Tuesday at Adaka, a suburb of the state capital.
The suspects also sexually assaulted two female passengers, according to Amos, the National Record newspaper’s correspondent for Benue State, who spoke to media in Makurdi.
According to him, the event happened on Tuesday night at 9 o’clock along the Naka-Makurdi Road, a short distance from Makurdi.
Amos claimed that after boarding the car to travel from Otukpo to Makurdi, he and the other passengers encountered a roadblock set up by the alleged armed robbers.
“The incident occurred close to a police checkpoint near Adaka when some men, numbering about 10, forced our car to stop,” he recalled.
The robbers demanded that we lay face down while they took two of the female passengers into a nearby bush and sexually assaulted them. They then grabbed our phones and other belongings.
We could hear the female passengers screaming and pleading with the alleged robbers to spare them.
Amos lamented the absence of security personnel during the operation, which he estimated to have lasted an hour.
He stated that he had not yet reported the event to the police as of the time of publishing this report.
When reached, Catherine Anene, the state police public relations officer, stated that she had not yet received the robbery complaint.
