The public has been warned by Ghana’s central bank to stop giving people cedi banknote bouquets and hampers as gifts.
The public has just been cautioned by the Ghanaian central bank not to include cedi banknotes as decorations in bouquets and gift baskets when giving gifts to others.
According to the statement, the money was created to be used as a form of payment for the purchase of goods and services.
An online graphic quoted Mr. Dominic Owusu, Director of the Currency Department at the central bank, as saying on (March 30, 2023) that any other use of the currency was prohibited and would result in legal action.
The practice of using cedi notes as bouquets and gift baskets for weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations, he claimed the bank had observed, must be stopped.
In addition to breaking the law, he continued, defacing or harming currency notes makes them more likely to be spoiled or damaged.
This not only results in replacement costs but also has a negative impact on how the Central Bank functions.
As part of the celebrations for Ghana Month in March, Mr. Owusu was addressing journalists about ways to preserve the currency.
The statements made by Mr. Owusu shed light on the negative consequences of careless handling of currency notes, which have an impact not only on the economy but also on Ghanaians’ daily lives. To ensure the longevity of currency notes in circulation, the Central Bank implores the general public to cooperate and assume responsibility.
