Ghana is advised not to deport Burkinabe refugees who are escaping extremists

The government of Ghana has been urged urgently to stop the expulsion of refugees from Burkina Faso by the United Nations agency for refugees (UNHCR).

The allegations that hundreds of Burkinabe residents, including weak women and children, were being deported from Ghana after seeking safety from the violence that has ravaged their own country deeply concerned the UNHCR.

Recognising the seriousness of the situation, the UNHCR has stated that it is prepared to give Ghana further assistance in meeting the urgent needs of these refugees.

The Sahel region of Africa, including Burkina Faso, is experiencing a dire humanitarian catastrophe.

Over two million Burkinabes have been forced to evacuate their homes due to an Islamist insurgency in search of safety and refuge the constant bloodshed.

Due to the severity of the situation, neighbouring nations must focus their attention immediately and work together to safeguard and aid individuals who have been forced to flee the violence.
