Former Nigerian emir of Kano encounters putschists in Niger

One of the most famous traditional and religious figures in West Africa traveled to the nation of Niger’s capital, Niamey, on Wednesday to meet with the coup leaders.

The former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, paid a visit the day before the ECOWAS regional conference, which was scheduled for Thursday in Nigeria but was postponed due to the Niger junta’s failure to release President Mohamed Bazoum.

Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the former commander of Bazoum’s presidential guard, was allowed to meet Sanusi, a revered Tijanniyah Sufi spiritual leader and former governor of the Nigerian Central Bank. What was discussed hasn’t been made public yet.
