First flight out of Niger lands in Paris after the coup

Following a coup last week that deposed the nation’s democratically elected president, the first evacuation flight from Niger touched down in Paris on Wednesday morning.

Spain, France, and Italy all indicated that their citizens and other European nationals will be evacuated from Niger.

The Niger capital Niamey was the subject of recent violence, according to the French Foreign Ministry.

Protesters assaulted the embassy on Sunday while yelling “Long live Russia,” “Long live Putin,” and “Down with France” amid rising anti-French sentiment.

The West African regional group ECOWAS issued travel and financial sanctions against Niger on Sunday as the country’s situation worsened.
