Irish media reported on Wednesday that Sinead O’Connor, an international pop star who rose to prominence in the 1990s, has passed away at the age of 56.
It is with “great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead,” according to her family. Her family and friends are distraught and have asked for privacy during this extremely trying time, according to Irish national television RTE.
O’Connor, who was born in Dublin, recorded 10 albums throughout the course of her career. Her best-known rendition is of Prince’s 1990 song Nothing Compares 2 U.
Leo Varadkar, the prime minister of Ireland, led the tributes to the singer, noting that “her talent was unmatched and beyond compare, and her music was loved around the world.”
Condolences to her friends, family, and fans of her music, he continued.
In 2018, the musician embraced Islam and adopted the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat. She reportedly split her time between Britain and Ireland.
Her struggles with mental illness have been documented for years. Shane, her 17-year-old son, committed suicide last year.
