Following the announcement by authorities that he had won the election in the most populous country in Africa on Saturday, Nigerian Tinubu spoke to his supporters on Wednesday.
At the headquarters of his party in Abuja, Tinubu spoke “The ship is not going down or rotting away. Under President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we are firmly anchored.”
According to reports, Abubakar, the main opponent, got 29% of the vote, or nearly 7 million votes, while Tinubu got 37% of the vote, or nearly 8.8 million votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission announced the results live on television, with third-place finisher Obi taking 25% with about 6.1 million votes.
The two major opposition parties had called for a new election on Tuesday, claiming that the first one had been tainted by widespread vote-rigging and violence.
This election was the closest it had been in a while, with a surprise third-party contender mounting a forceful opposition.
The leaders of the two largest opposition parties, the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party, demanded the resignation of the head of the government’s electoral commission on Tuesday.
The party in power, the All Progressives Congress, told the opposition to give up and stop making trouble.
