Asian man detained by UAE for’mocking Emiratis’ on social media

An Asian national under investigation after being accused with various violations has been placed in detention, according to the Federal Prosecution for Combating Rumors and Cybercrimes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The accusations include utilizing the internet improperly by making provocative posts that sway public opinion and jeopardize the public interest, as well as by disseminating materials that violate media standards and offend Emirati society.

According to Emirates News Agency, WAM, the order was made after the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the UAE Attorney General Office found a video clip on social media platforms of the defendant wearing Emirati clothing inside a luxury car showroom, followed by two people carrying what appeared to be a sizable amount of money.

The defendant seen in the video was acting imprudently and with a disdain for the value of money by demanding to buy a car for more than AED two million from the showroom owner while also handing out large sums of cash to the staff members.

As a result, the actions foster an objectionable and unfavorable perception of Emirati citizens, mock them, and so provoke and inflame public opinion, hurting the public interest.

The proprietor of the auto dealership where the aforementioned video was shot was also ordered to appear before the Public Prosecution.

The Public Prosecution urged UAE citizens who use social media sites to respect Emirati culture and adhere to the law and moral principles when posting content online.
