Are you a US-based Facebook user? You might receive a settlement payment

1 min read

Anyone who has had a Facebook account in the United States since May 24, 2007, and who is eligible to receive a share of the $725 million privacy settlement that parent company Meta has agreed to pay, may now submit an application.

The world’s largest social media platform, Meta, is paying to settle claims that it permitted millions of its users’ personal information to be given to Cambridge Analytica, a company that helped Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election.

The amount of money that each user will get is unclear. Since the funds must be distributed among them, each payment will be smaller the more people who submit valid claims.

Users can print out the form and mail it in or fill it out online to apply for the settlement.

The matter arose from 2018 revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a company connected to Trump political strategist Steve Bannon, had paid a Facebook app developer for access to the personal data of approximately 87 million platform users. Following that, during the 2016 election campaign that resulted in Trump’s victory as the 45th president, that information was used to target American voters.

The outrage over the revelations prompted lawmakers in the US to question a repentant Zuckerberg and sparked requests for people to delete their Facebook accounts.

Facebook still has more than 2 billion users worldwide, including an estimated 250 million in the US, despite the fact that its growth has slowed as more people connect and amuse themselves on rival services like TikTok.
