Is artificial intelligence (AI) ushering in a fourth industrial revolution now that it has become a ubiquitous, if mostly unnoticed, presence in our daily lives?

A world leader in advisory services, Ernst & Young (EY), says that AI has ushered in “a time when machines will become smart, self-optimizing themselves and the systems in which they operate,” according to Nicola Morini Bianzino, Global Chief Client Technology Officer at EY.

Although AI will have a significant impact on our working lives, few people are aware of how it has the ability to disrupt current workflows and give us access to new abilities.

More than a quarter (28%) of UK citizens, according to a recent survey by Aimpoint Digital, a provider of AI and data analytics services, have never heard of the technology.

The study also found that only two in ten Britons had ever utilized AI at work, and of those, half admit to doing so secretly or without their manager’s permission.

The findings follow recent allegations that UK businesses are ready to axe tens of thousands of jobs over the course of the next ten years due to the introduction of AI.

More generally, a recent analysis from Goldman Sachs predicted that the adoption of AI might result in the loss of 300 million jobs globally.

The data emphasizes how urgent it is for businesses to embrace the AI revolution and provide their workers with the necessary skills to take advantage of its benefits.

Uninformed or unaware people may be more susceptible to the hazards and biases connected with AI-powered technology since they are less aware of how to critically evaluate and use them.

As with many revolutions, John Rudaizky, global brand, marketing, and experiences leader at EY, stated during this year’s Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity that “[AI] will bring] a degree of displacement, but there’s also new and unexpected roles that will come out.”

As Rudaizky stated to Euronews Next, “AI is without a doubt the biggest conversation around here, and it’s pretty much the biggest conversation in every boardroom around the world because it’s going to completely transform the world.”

In some respects, AI “frees them [employees] up from the mundane and creates an opportunity to do the real magic in the world,” he claimed.

“Overall, it will alter how we hire people based on their talent. The manner some new roles are created will change as a result.

He added that the virtual world will “probably supercharge” the upskilling projects, “personalize them or make them more engaging” because it is “a very powerful way in which you can communicate and engage people.”
