New accusations have been brought against Nigeria’s suspended central bank chief

Godwin ‘Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been charged with new offenses.

In order to press 20 more counts in the Federal High Court of Abuja, the prosecution wanted to drop its initial accusation of illegal possession of firearms, according to local media Punch on Tuesday, August 15.

In June, Godwin Emefiele was sent on leave by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

In July of last year, he subsequently appointed a special investigator to look into the operations of the nation’s top bank and other connected companies.

The former CBN chairman was arraigned in court on July 25 and entered a “not guilty” plea to the two counts of illegal possession of a pistol and ammunition that the Federal Government had brought against him.

On July 25, after he entered a plea, the judge decided to release him on bond in defiance of the attorney general’s office’s protests. Emefiele’s trial was set to begin in November after the matter was postponed.

But the sexagenarian was promptly detained again.
