Algerians grieve fire victims

On Thursday, Algerians held funerals for the 34 persons who perished in the fires.

The wildfires burned for days, obliterating homes and charring enormous tracts of woodland.

16 people lost their lives in one small community while attempting to escape the fire.

The families of those slain, including 10 troops who were caught by flames in the region of Bejaia, have received condolence messages from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Every year, Algeria’s northern and eastern regions fight forest fires, but this year’s Mediterranean weather has made things worse.

According to Interior Minister Brahim Merad, at its worst, more than 100 fires were burning across 17 provinces, causing more than 1500 people to flee their homes.
