Long periods of sitting increase the risk of obesity and heart disease

Long periods of sitting have been linked to an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, according to the German Federal Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA).

According to the institution, prolonged sitting increases the risk of serious head, neck, and back conditions.

People whose jobs need them to sit still for extended periods of time should alternate between sitting and standing every so often, stretch, and incorporate motor exercises into their workdays by using the stairs instead of the elevator.

The correct sitting position is also crucial. The seat should be at knee height, the feet should be firmly planted on the ground, the thigh and leg should form a right angle as much as possible, the upper arm and forearm should also form a right angle, and the back should rest on the backrest.
