In a recent report, a panel of investigators supported by the United Nations claims that several South Sudanese officials have committed grave human rights violations and should be held accountable.

The Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan’s report, which was released on Monday, names Joseph Monytuil, the governor of Unity State, along with other senior government and military officials, for committing serious human rights violations.

According to the report, Lt. Gen. Thoi Chany Reat of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces is one of the people who should be the subject of a criminal investigation for the state-authorized extrajudicial killings that took place in Mayom County in August 2022.

The report also makes reference to Koch County Commissioner Gordon Koang and accuses him of being involved in attacks on civilians in the town of Leer in February and April 2022.

The officials could not be reached for comment right away.

The youngest country in the world, South Sudan, is advised by U.N. experts to address “impunity” in order to stop ongoing violence and human rights violations. According to the report, those responsible for the most serious crimes, such as widespread attacks against civilians and extrajudicial killings, continue to go unpunished.

Yasmin Sooka, the head of the investigating commissions, said: “Over the course of several years, our findings have consistently demonstrated that impunity for serious crimes is a central driver of violence and misery experienced by civilians in South Sudan.

Due to their involvement in serious human rights violations, more people have been named who merit criminal investigation and prosecution.

The report is based on inquiries conducted by the commission over the previous 12 months.
