Insiderblm previously reported on how a nationwide flood ravaged many communities, washed away farms, and destroyed people’s property.

Commuters passing through affected areas have had to take longer routes to their destinations.

Many roads have been washed away, and farmland, houses, vehicles, and structures have all been destroyed by the flood.

Over 600 people have died, and 1.3 million people have been displaced, according to the Nigerian government.

“We are deeply concerned that the flooding will exacerbate Nigeria’s already dire food insecurity and malnutrition situation,” said Stephane Dujarric.

At a time when over 19 million Nigerians experience severe food insecurity, more than 440,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed wholly or partially.

According to a UN spokesman, cereal production is expected to fall by 3.4% in 2021 as a result of flooding, high agricultural production costs, and insecurity.

Since July, thousands of affected households in Nigeria have received food, non-food items, and clean drinking water from national authorities.

“We’ve provided emergency shelter kits and are working to build local water drains, sandbags, and walling around shelters to help mitigate the effects of the flooding,” he added.
