Young learners from Mènontin Nord Public Primary School in Cotonou are showcasing their creativity in a competition organized by the International Comic Book Meetings of Cotonou.
Renowned Burkinabe actress and comic book creator Roukiata Ouédraogo is guiding the students, drawing inspiration from her well-known comic Ouaga Pressé, which is based on her popular show that has captivated audiences across Africa.
During the workshop, Ouédraogo taught the students essential skills in storytelling, scriptwriting, and illustration. She introduced them to a local figure, an Amazon from Benin, known as “Assiba” in Fon, as the central theme of their creative work.
“I drew a woman, ‘Assiba,’ who is washing bowls,” said Sauvée. “Although drawing isn’t my favorite activity, I decided to give it a try.” Sauvée’s effort was rewarded with a prize—a check to purchase a comic book.
Ouédraogo praised the students’ potential, highlighting their talent and promising future in the comic book industry. “We witnessed remarkable artwork and engaging narratives. These children should be supported and nurtured in their artistic journey,” she stated.
As part of the Educational Resources initiative, the International Comic Book Meetings are enabling young artists to publish a comic series called Histoires Cotonoises. One of the participants, Osée Vaincre, authored Kutonu A Fon, a story about an influencer determined to achieve fame, no matter the cost.
“My inspiration came from personal experiences and those of my peers. We all dream of success, recognition, and prosperity, sometimes to the extent of making difficult choices. This story reflects our ambitions and challenges,” Vaincre explained.
The International Comic Book Meetings are igniting enthusiasm among aspiring creators, fostering the growth of the comic book industry in Benin and setting an example for young talents across Africa.
