Child themes let you customize and change your WordPress theme without having to touch the main theme. This way, you can keep getting theme updates without losing your customizations. One of our readers recently inquired about how he could use his child theme on his wife’s website. We’ll show you how to use your child theme on another WordPress site in this article.
The First Steps
The safest way to customize and change a WordPress theme is to use child themes.
Child themes are completely portable, allowing you to use them on as many different websites as you want. You can install them on another WordPress site after downloading them. If your child theme meets certain criteria, you can even submit it to the WordPress theme directory for others to use.
Last but not least, before you do anything, make sure you have a complete WordPress backup of both of your sites.
Changing the Theme of a WordPress Child Theme
To begin, use an FTP client to connect to your website and navigate to the /wp-content/themes directory. After that, save both the child and parent theme folders to your computer.

The next process is to get an FTP client to connect to the WordPress site whenever you want to install your child theme. Navigate to the /wp-content/themes/ directory and upload both the child and parent theme folders to the new site.
Now go to Appearance » Themes in the admin area of the site where you want to install the child theme. You’ll notice that both parent and child themes have been installed.

To make sure everything is working properly, click the live preview button under the child theme. You can safely activate the child theme on your new WordPress site once you’re satisfied.
