Eid al-Fitr in Goma: A Message of Unity and Peace

1 min read

As the morning sun illuminated Goma, hundreds of Muslim worshippers came together on Sunday to observe Eid al-Fitr, marking the conclusion of Ramadan. For the Muslim community in this conflict-stricken city, currently under M23 rebel control, the celebration was not only a religious observance but also a symbol of unity, hope, and a strong desire for peace.

Among the worshippers, Yasin Hamad shared a heartfelt message, emphasizing the need for togetherness. “We deeply desire togetherness among everyone.. We pray that God grants us peace and removes divisions within the Muslim community,” he expressed.

Thousands of men, women, and children gathered for prayers, their hearts filled with faith and optimism for a brighter future. Their collective voices rose in unison, seeking peace and security for eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Nadia Moustapha, another worshipper, conveyed her trust in the power of prayer, saying, “We believe that, after completing this sacred month, our prayers will be answered by God, allowing us to live in peace once again.”

Religious leaders used the occasion to reinforce the importance of solidarity and devotion during these challenging times. Imam Shieh Djaffar Al Katanty highlighted the significance of the congregation praying side by side, regardless of language, culture, or ethnicity. “This gathering exemplifies unity, and we hope it sends a message to the DRC government, the conflict parties, and the AFC/M23,” he stated.

Despite ongoing difficulties, Goma’s Muslim community celebrated Eid with deep devotion and unwavering hope. Their prayers not only called for peace but also for the restoration of harmony and stability in the region, aspiring for a future where normalcy prevails once more.
